Measure Your Fashion's Real Impact

Every garment has a carbon footprint. Closetary calculates it using real data — not estimates — from UK government sources and academic research.

Our Methodology

How We Calculate Carbon Footprints

Our carbon scoring engine uses a Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) approach aligned with PAS 2050, calculating emissions across the full garment lifecycle.

1

Material Analysis

Parse material composition (e.g., 80% cotton, 20% polyester) and apply Higg MSI emission factors per material.

2

Manufacturing Impact

Apply country-of-origin multipliers reflecting energy grid carbon intensity during manufacturing.

3

Transport Emissions

Calculate origin-to-UK transport emissions based on distance and shipping method.

4

Care & Washing

Estimate lifetime washing impact: water temperature, drying method, wash frequency, and garment lifespan.

5

Total & Score

Sum all stages, normalise to 0–100 scale (24 kg CO₂e = 100), assign rating from Excellent to Very High.

Carbon Score Scale

Every item gets a score from 0 to 100 (lower is better)

Take Action

Every Action Saves Carbon

Closetary calculates exactly how much CO₂ you save with each sustainable choice.

Resell

Every resold item displaces a new purchase, saving the full production carbon footprint.

Donate

Charity donations extend garment life and divert clothes from landfill.

Swap

Peer-to-peer swaps refresh your wardrobe without any new production emissions.

Repair & Upcycle

Extending a garment's life by just 9 months reduces its carbon footprint by ~20-30%.
